Last month we received the news that one of our favourite restaurants in Singapore – Sorrel – closed its doors. Luckily – as the saying goes – when one door closes, another (restaurant) one opens. Cheek by Jowl has taken over the space, opened up the front to reflect Head Chef Rishi Naleendra’s menu and personality and serves Modern Australian dishes with an Asian twist.
We visited last week to try the set lunch they have on offer and enjoyed every dish they served and more. We started off our lunch with Oysters and Smoked Tomato. Followed by New Zealand Coral Trout with Cucumber, Yuzu and Buttermilk and Wild Venison Tartare with Wasabi, Zucchini and Fermented Plums for starters. Our main courses were the vegetarian dish of Roast Pumpkin with Spiced Cashew Nut, Kale, Pumpkin Seed and the Barramundi with Charred Scallion, Turnips and Burnt Lemon. Lastly – our lunch was finished with an espresso and Black Olive Cake with Strawberries, White Chocolate Crumb and Fresh Yogurt as dessert.
All dishes were very well executed and the unexpected pairings of flavours and texture worked perfectly. We are therefore happy to have Cheek by Jowl on board for EATSingapore 2016.
